Franschoek, Western Cape
2011

On completion of the manor house at the Maison Wine Estate, the owner Chris Weylandt, commenced with the final stages of the estate plan – to complete the wine cellar, wine tasting facility and a restaurant – to be called “Kitchen”. The restaurant is partially located in a restored existing 1930’s house, onto which we have added a new dining wing and wide verandah.

The design for the restoration and new additions carried forward the ideas central to the manor house – of simplicity and effectiveness, of subtlety and light.  The details are clean and purposeful and take their cue from the rich history and directness of the Cape Dutch tradition.

This was a unique opportunity to create a space for relaxed summer lunches, to encourage guests to rest a while, and to soak in the magnificent vistas and gentle sunsets.
