Residence - Llandudno, Cape Town
2009
The Llandudno Beach House site commands pride of place over idyllic Llandudno beach. The site, situated just above the beach, slopes steeply and is north facing. The view orientation takes in the beach, the rocks, surrounding mountains and the Atlantic Ocean.
The form of the building is a simple double storey rectangle covered by a symmetrical pitched roof. The footprint of the building is parallel to the existing contours. The sea facing facade, with terraces, is entirely open to the views and protected by overhangs and sliding shutters.
Arrival at the open plan upper level introduces the inhabitant instantly to the magnificent surrounding setting. Private spaces, with access to garden and pool are situated at the lower level.
Timber has been used extensively as external and internal cladding, shuttering and decking. The original fynbos and Milkwood vegetation was protected during construction and incorporated into the overall design.
